Women Helping Women: Pakistan
A Plea for Help and a Focus on Widows

THE HORRIFIC EARTH QUAKE HIT PAKISTAN ON 8TH OCT 2005.

On the 8th of Oct 2005 at 8: 58 am the earth quake hit some parts of the province of Punjab, and many parts of the province of NWFP. This tragic earth quake brought lot of destruction. The quake has wiped out villages, and there is a lot of loss of human lives. According to the official reports 79 thousands people have died, where as the un-official reports say, that more than 300, 000 people had died, but these are not exact figures as no one yet has been able to figure out the exact figure of the quake victims.

4 million People are shelter less due to this quake, more than half a million children have been orphaned, and the same is with women. Thousands of children have been disabled. Thousands of women have been widowed. 25, 000 pregnant women have been affected and 63, 000 women have been widowed.

Currently the WHW is concentrating on the emergency needs of the victims.

THE UN-REACHED AREAS:

Still there are many areas that have not been reached simply, because there are no sources to approach these affected areas. Only through the helicopters, one can reach and the government, NGO, S and the Pakistan Army are trying to reach the victims in the un-reached areas.

THE SUB-DISTIRCT OF HAWAILI:

The WHW has selected sub-district of hawaili for providing the needs of the quake victims. Only in Hawaili 200, 000 people are homeless and thousands of children have been disabled and orphaned. There are thousands of women who are widow and homeless along with their children. The earth quake wiped out 100 villages only in the sub-district of Hawaili.

THE PRESENT SITUATION:

At present the situation in the quake hit areas is very poor, there is relief work going on and there are dead bodies under the remains, and the smell is making the atmosphere un-healthy. The whole sewerage system is destroyed and due to which the situation is still very critical. The people are without facilities. There are injured, dead, orphaned widowed, and disabled, and the aid for the quake victims is not enough. They victims are settled in tent villages but these tents will not protect them in winter.

THE WIDOWED WOMEN:

The widow women that survived are in a terrible situation. They lost their husbands and children and in majority of the families the widow is the only person who survived. Many of them are young and it will be difficult for them to live their lives un-married. There is a big challenge. Some of the women have children and their husbands died and their husbands were the only source of income in the family. So this also brought lot of suffering in their lives.

THE WINTER AND THE QUAKE VICTIMS:

The winter has started and almost in all parts of northern quake hit areas, there is snow falling, so these people have lot of difficulties due to snow and cold breeze during winter. The tents will not give them proper shelter, but still some thing is better than nothing. Only two weeks are left to reach these people, so when the snow falling starts it will be difficult to reach most of the parts of the affected areas.

THE PRESENT NEEDS:

At present the WHW plans to extend cooperation to the widow women, and it is providing the emergency needs, like food, medicine, warm cloths, blankets etc.

LONG TERM NEEDS:

The WHW helping Women envisions supporting widowed women by introducing income generating schemes so that they may have a source of income to re-start their lives.

Helping the widow women to look after their children, and educate them.

SPONSOR A WIDOW PROGRAM:

The WHW is requesting friends and organizations to support one widow so that these women have hope and prosperity after experiencing such a horrific earth quake.
