AnnMarie Ginella, of WidowSpeak and Dr. Laura Slap-Shelton, of Grief and Renewal will co-moderate a panel discussion on the global conditions of widowhood. Panelists will include esteemed guests from Iraq and India who are working for advancement of widows in their countries.
The panel will begin with a showing of the film, White Rainbow, set in India in the city of Vrindavan, or "City of Widows." Following the film, there will be an overview of the conditions of widows, followed by speakers addressing their projects that aid widows and children. The conversation will provide opportunities for participant involvement.
Panel Members:
AnnMarie Ginella – Co-Moderator – Widow, Founder and Publisher of WidowSpeak, a non-profit literary and humanitarian project supporting widows worldwide.
Dr. Laura Slap-Shelton – Co-Moderator - Psychologist, Author, Widow, Founder of "Grief and Renewal," a website that supports the widows of India and Africa through unique cooperative programs.
Dr. Rajaa al-Khuzai is currently the President of the Iraqi National Council of Women and is the founder and President of the Iraqi Widows Organization. She was nominated for Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. She obtained her degree in medicine from Baghdad University in 1968, and was the first female doctor from Ad-Diwaniyah City.
Dr. V. Mohini Giri - Widow, Former chair, National Commission for Women in India, Chairperson of the "Guild of Service" since 1979, a social service organization which helps the displaced widows of India.
Julie Mughal – Widow, Author, Ms. Mughal served as the Asia Operations Manager for Save the Children. Ms. Mughal has traveled to Pakistan, Haiti, Nepal, and the Philippines in her work with widows. She is the author of Land Without Hats.
